When a kratom vendor says their product is "lab tested," a third-party laboratory has analyzed a sample and reported what's in it. A proper test covers three main areas: alkaloid content (how much mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine), heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury), and microbiological contaminants (salmonella, E. coli, yeast, mould). Here's what each one means and why it matters.
Kratom is an agricultural product — grown outdoors, harvested by hand, dried, milled, and shipped across the world. The only way to know what's actually in a bag of powder is to have an independent lab test it. This is what that test looks at.
1. Alkaloid content
Alkaloids are the naturally occurring compounds in the kratom leaf. A lab test measures them so you can compare products objectively instead of relying on a strain name.
Mitragynine is the primary alkaloid in kratom and the one most tests report on. It's usually given as a percentage of the powder's weight or in milligrams per gram. Two products with the same strain name can have quite different mitragynine levels, which is exactly why the lab number matters more than the label.
7-hydroxymitragynine (7-OH) is a second alkaloid present in trace amounts in natural leaf. Tests report it too. This is important because concentrated or synthetic 7-OH products are a different category entirely — many states regulate them separately, and responsible vendors avoid them. In natural leaf, 7-OH appears only in very small amounts, and the lab report confirms that.
Why it matters: alkaloid testing is how you compare batches honestly. A strain name is marketing; the alkaloid percentage is data.
2. Heavy metals
Kratom draws minerals from the soil it grows in — and that includes heavy metals if the soil contains them. This is one of the most important safety tests, because heavy metals accumulate in the body over time.
A proper test screens for:
- Lead
- Arsenic
- Cadmium
- Mercury
These are the four heavy metals most commonly tested in botanical products, and regulated states often set limits on them. A clean heavy-metals result tells you the leaf was grown and processed in conditions that didn't contaminate it.
Why it matters: you can't see, smell, or taste heavy-metal contamination. Only a lab can catch it. This test is non-negotiable for any product you'd actually consume.
3. Microbiological contaminants
Kratom is a dried plant that's been stored and transported, sometimes across oceans. That creates opportunities for microbial growth if it isn't handled properly. Microbiological testing screens for:
- Salmonella
- E. coli
- Yeast and mould
Salmonella contamination in kratom has been a real issue historically, which is exactly why this test exists. A clean microbiological result tells you the product was dried, handled, and stored in sanitary conditions.
Why it matters: this is basic food-safety testing applied to a dried botanical. It's the difference between a product that was handled carefully and one that wasn't.
What a good Certificate of Analysis shows
When all these tests are done, the lab issues a Certificate of Analysis (COA) — a report on that specific batch. A trustworthy COA includes:
- The name of the testing laboratory (a real, independent lab)
- The batch or lot number it applies to
- The date tested
- The results for alkaloids, heavy metals, and microbials
The COA should be for the specific batch you're buying, identifiable by a lot number that matches the one on your pouch. A generic or years-old COA that doesn't tie to your actual product isn't worth much.
Red flags to watch for
Not all "lab tested" claims are equal. Be cautious if:
- The vendor won't show you a COA when asked
- The COA has no lab name or comes from an unnamed source
- The COA is old or doesn't match a lot number on the product
- Only alkaloids are tested, with no heavy-metal or microbial screening
- The results are presented as marketing images rather than an actual lab document
A real COA is a technical document, not a marketing graphic. That's the whole point of independent testing.
